Traffic cones – those orange and white indicators drivers dread that roadworks lie ahead. But cones play an important role keeping thousands of road workers safe.

But cones play an important role keeping thousands of road workers safe. Here are some fascinating facts about those little guardians of highway workers:

  • There are approximately 1.3 million traffic cones on Britain’s roads today.
  • David Morgan of Oxford has the world’s largest collection of 137 different traffic cones.
  • The Highways Agency has introduced variants of the standard orange and white cone, including blue, yellow and green cones and one that screams when hit.
  • In Seattle, USA, there is an 18-foot high cone monument.

On a more serious note, working on roads, whether on construction, resurfacing, repairing services or potholes, can be a dangerous business. It’s important that any contractor you hire has completed the appropriate level of professional training course accredited by the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991.

Training covers working and supervising work safely on roads with a speed limit up to 50mph. It includes:

  • Locating the service that needs repair and avoiding the ones that don’t
  • Setting up equipment such as temporary road signage, barriers, lighting and guarding units
  • Excavation
  • Back filling after the work is done and reinstating the road surface with hot-lay bituminous materials or concrete
